Calvin Richard Cates passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2022 at the age of 69. Loving husband to Claudia Cates (nee Barnes); dedicated father to Jennifer (Damon) Williams and Kristin (Dan) McCullen; dear grandfather to Damon, Reid, and Caleb; beloved brother to Marcia (the late Al) Shiffert and Melisa (Grant) Van Dolah; dear uncle to Cara (Toly) Litvin and Mindy Shiffert; beloved great uncle to Landon Shiffert. Brother in law to Rick Barnes, Jeff (Denise) Barnes, and Tina (the late John) Miazza; Son in law to Shirley (Ron) Willman; uncle and friend to many.
Rich is preceded in death by his parents Wanda and Calvin Cates and his father-in-law Claude Barnes.
Rich spent 24 wonderful years with his wife, Claudia. Rich enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, fishing with his grandsons, and reminiscing about his high school football days with his pals. He graduated from Francis Howell High School 1971 and played on the first football team. He idolized his coach Frank Davis. Rich hosted several reunions with his former football buddies at his bar, Rich's Place. He was so happy two of his grandsons are part of the Francis Howell football program--- once a Viking-- always a Viking. He graduated Warrensburg College and was President of Sigma Pi his senior year.. Rich always said he wished he could have stayed in college for 8 years instead of 4. Rich took pride in watching his grandchildren play football and baseball. Rich enjoyed music, sitting in the rain, and watching the sunsets. Rich was an avid family man and enjoyed making many memories together.
Memorial contributions may be made in Rich's name to the Cancer Research Institute.
